Taxes and Fees
Local telecommunication fees and surcharges can vary significantly depending on your location, the specific services you use, and the regulations in place. These fees are typically added to your telephone or internet service bill and fund various programs, services, and regulatory requirements. Common examples include:

  • Universal Service Fund (USF) Fee: Ensures all Americans have access to affordable telecommunications services, subsidizing services in rural and underserved areas.
  • Federal Universal Service Charge (FUSC): A percentage of your monthly phone bill
contributing to the USF, varying by provider and services.
  • Local Taxes: Local governments may impose taxes on telecommunications services, including sales tax, utility tax, and 911 service fees.
  • E-911 Fee: Funds emergency services, such as 911 call centers, supporting infrastructure and staffing.
  • State Regulatory Fees: Imposed by states to fund specific programs or regulatory agencies.
Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) Fund: Supports services for individuals with
hearing or speech disabilities , enabling phone communication.
  • State 911 Fee: Levied by some states to fund their 911 systems.
  • Municipal or County Fees: Additional fees imposed by local governments to support local programs or services.
  • Infrastructure or Franchise Fees: Charged by service providers to recover costs associated with building and maintaining network infrastructure.
Review your monthly telecommunications bills and statements carefully to understand these fees and surcharges. These fees are often mandated by government regulations, and service providers must collect and remit them. The specific names and rates of these fees can vary by location and service provider. If you have questions or concerns, contact your service provider or consult your local government’s regulations.
